about

There is a narrative to this tune, albeit a simple one: it begins with a haunting melody line on the fiddle, accompanied by a second plucked fiddle part. Just when we think that the melody has ‘died’ a little spark rekindles it and the music launches into a dance-like section. This dance is off kilter though, as it has some uneven meter. The flames are sputtering, trying to keep growing, but ultimately the flames die down again and only the glowing embers remain. In some ways this tune ends with a question mark because it leaves the possibility for new flames to be rekindled.
