about

I wrote this tune a few weeks into the COVID19 pandemic. It was a time of uncertainty, doubt, shock, and mourning: an unprecedented time. As I was trying to process everything that was happening, I remember being drawn back to the psalms in the Old Testament: all of them written by ordinary human beings just like me. These psalms are essentially prayers that reflect all the highs and lows of life: joyful gratitude, crushing doubts, assurance of love, and fear about the future. I noticed that many times, the authors would praise God for his saving grace and ask God to save them almost in the same breath. Jubilate Deo is my prayerful utterance of such paradox. The text (in Latin) simply states: “Praise God. Give us your peace, Lord.”

lyrics

Jubilate Deo, jubilate [Praise God, give him praise]
Jubilate Deo, jubilate [Praise God, give him praise]
Dona nobis pacem [Give us your peace, Lord]
Dona nobis pacem [Give us your peace, Lord]
Jubilate Deo [Praise God]
