When I was little I watched some episodes of a French television show, featuring Nicola playing his flute and the Sandman; together they sailed in a little boat over the homes of children and sprinkled sand over them to help them fall asleep. I don’t know if it was the episodes or the idea that someone could magically put me to sleep (I had the hardest time falling asleep as a child!) that mesmerized me the most: either way, I remained enchanted by the idea of such a person. When I wrote this tune, I imagined that the Sandman might make an exception for one restless, sleepless child: instead of sprinkling sand over her eyes, the Sandman would invite her into the boat and take her on a magical ride before returning her safely back and sending her off to sleep. This tune is a musical picture of what that ride must have felt like (think of the Peter Pan ride in Disneyland if you’ve been on it and you’re half way there!)
