about

I grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland. Growing up on an island one becomes aware of the ocean early on. While I don’t remember there being much sun at the Scottish beaches, I do remember exploring the beaches in Santa Barbara, Southern California: the sky was so blue and the
sun so very bright. I remember how it glinted off the surface of the water. I was especially fascinated watching seaweed drift in the water, how it moved. The Seahorse melody has something of the graceful, stately, yet unpredictable motion of ocean currents to me. Even the mode (Mixolydian) evokes a kind of gentle sinking feeling: the leading tone (scale degree seven) is lowered — what would normally be F-sharp in the key of G is lowered to F-natural, creating an other-worldly kind of sound scape.
